MANAGING GROWTH

Looking ahead, there are ways to impact and complement the Ozona commercial activity center, to maintain the valuable older residences, and to allow redevelopment while preserving the old-time “fishing village” identity of the town. A “smart growth” approach to Ozona’s Orange Street corridor would certainly include enhancements that will not alter but will complement the old Florida feeling.

Our business owners have historically shown a great willingness to establish partnerships with the community. Business owners, as well as local residents, have generously supported programs at Ozona Elementary School (i.e. The Giving Tree, mentorship programs, sponsorships) and they have consistently supported special projects connected with community wide events (i.e. Ozona Days, Old Timers Reunion) as well as with upkeep of the Ozona Village Hall. Our Ozona News, a community newsletter published by OVIS, edited and circulated by volunteer effort, relies on business sponsors.

This area’s historical relationship with St. Joseph Sound and the Gulf of Mexico creates an opportunity to work with the local marina owners. Our Ozona marinas provide a valuable service to commercial and recreational boaters from miles around.

Non-profit funding, private foundation monies, and grants could be used to help create initiatives for businesses and homeowners that want to take an active role in sustaining the character of old Ozona. A possibility exists to explore incentives to business or homeowners who choose to become more active in the preservation and enhancement of Ozona’s historic features.

The Ozona community is a working example of what planners purposefully design as revitalization of urban communities becomes a trend. In the past Ozona has been, and currently continues to be a community in which residents can walk, work and live amidst the necessary support systems. We want to keep this.

Escalating property taxes and affordable housing are of concern. At the same juncture low-density development is a galvanizing issue for which there is broad support. We wish to maintain the diversity of our community as a place that is welcoming to people in a wide range of occupations and circumstances.
